STUDENT PROJECT
FishMarket

Overview

Our assignment for this project was to create three interfaces for the same data: one with no limitations, one that could be used without vision, and one that could be used without vision or hearing. Choosing “casual” (long-term) investors as our audience, we designed a series of ambient office displays for stock market data.

The virtual fish tank maps personal portfolio data to groups of swimming fish. Abstract whale sounds keep investors updated about the performance of significant markets and indices. And finally, a keychain display lets users feel their portfolio’s performance in a process we dubbed “informational fidgeting.”

Activities

  • Researched the needs of investors and current portfolio-monitoring tools.
  • Designed several iterations of the product concept.
  • Designed several iterations of the product function, form, and interface.

Innovation & hot design topics

  • All three interfaces are ambient displays that don’t require full attention.
  • The system is multi-modal, displaying visual, aural, and tactile data.
  • Using a systems approach, we designed three related displays which give different but complimentary data.
